VoCATIonAL CoLLEgE LIVE, ESpoo, fInLAnd
Located within the lively Turuntie district of Leppävaara, Espoo, is the new Live Vocational College building
maintained by the disability foundation. invalidisäätiö is a vocational school for secondary education and a
center for the development of SEn education. it accommodates spaces for 500 SEn pupils as well as 150
members of staff. The building resides in a leafy, hilly residential area, not far from the center of Leppävaara,
which is currently under development . A large shopping center, Sello, is also located to the west of the site.
Featuring south and west facing facades along the busy Turuntie road, the walls are clad with vertical ceramic
pipes which partially obscure the windows and filter out most of the direct sunlight. This, combined with artifi-
cial lights, will assist with the daily needs of visually impaired students. A sheltered courtyard space is formed
from the buildings large curves and extended facades that blend with roof’s broad canopy. The courtyard’s
facades are clad with ecologically silicate-impregnated wood that have aged to become beautifully grey hue.
A four storey central lobby greets the visitor and is the heart of the accessible building. in addition to the class
room facilities, this multi-purpose building includes high-quality music training rooms, teaching kitchen, audio
and dance training facilities as well as various work practice rooms. The chosen tones and materials all work
to create seamless harmony between the interior and exterior materials of the building.

helsinki-based PES-Architects is among the most international architecture and interior design
firms in Finland. Founded in 1968, we now have a multinational staff of over 70 and a Shanghai
studio established in 2010. We work towards an architecture that embraces a cross-disciplinary
approach, often engaging external designers and specialists. our projects encompass complex
and wide-ranging building types, including airports and transport terminals, performance ven-
ues, sports facilities, arenas and mixed-used developments, as well as demanding refurbishment
projects. We believe that a relatively small nordic architecture office can succeed globally pro-
vided that certain basic credentials are fulfilled: the right references, the latest technologies and
an innovative team. To this we add a creative vision distinct from the international mainstream as
well as a deep understanding of user experience, sound building practices and a comprehensive
approach to project management.
