WEST TERmInAL 2, poRT of HELSInkI
West Terminal 2 was completed in 2017 to meet the needs of 
growing ferry traffic from helsinki West harbour on the busy 
helsinki-Tallinn route. The guiding design principle was to en-
sure the smooth, fast and safe flow of passengers on and off 
ships. The terminal is compact at ground level, with a wide 
departure lounge raised 10 metres off the ground and placed 
crosswise between two berths. This allows boarding vehicle traf-
fic to flow under the building while minimising foot passengers’ 
walking distances between the terminal and ships. The timber 
ceiling of the hangar-like lounge swoops down from a height of 
9 metres, directing passengers to the boarding bridges at the 
sides. A curved glass wall opens to a magnificent view of the sea. 
The sculptural form of the building evokes a giant ray or other 
sea creature washed ashore, with glass, concrete and alumini-
um facades that gleam in the sun.
