Ark-Tellus was established in 2011 by Eivind hanch-hansen and Sverre Aaker Sondresen. The 
studio is located in Tønsberg, southwest of oslo. Architects have broad experience with housing 
projects of all sizes. The work of the studio is based on a tectonic discussion of construction, 
materials and human scale, clarified from each particular site´s topography and natural char-
acter. The dialogue between landscape and built environment and the desire to create a modern 
interpretation of local architecture, are consistent values.

CAbIn RISøR
The summer cabin is located on a small island close to Risør on the south-eastern coast of norway. An old 
cottage was sited at the island´s mid-point. The client asked for a new cabin as replacement for the old one. 
The new cabin is placed in the same mid-point with an outdoor atrium as a nave for all activities. All rooms are 
directly connected to the atrium. The building wraps around the atrium thus giving shelter for outdoor meals 
and calm activities. The rooms have selected views to the surrounding sea, fjord and close nature with smooth 
cliffs and pinetrees. The living rooms and kitchen also meet the cliffs outside on a lower level that opens to-
wards the sea in northwest, evening sun and sunset. A colonnade along the front has specially designed move-
able screens that protects the indoor spaces from the hot evening sun and gives a semi-transparent play of 
light and shadow to the rooms.

VILLA RoSAnES
The villa is a complete remodelling of a residence from the 1920s. it was originally a Jugend-style villa, but has 
since been refurbished several times. With larger construction-parts damaged, a major reconstruction was 
required. The client asked for reconstruction which would relate to the environment consisting of classic villas, 
but with a contemporary interpretation. The new design preserves the main structure and retains the place on 
site with it´s characteristic volume and profile. The entrance, ground plan and interior has been relocated and 
the upper attic removed, so that the first floor has got spacious rooms underneath the pitched roof. The whole 
exterior of the building is clad in cedarwood and given precise detailing. important achievements of the design 
has been to open up and strengthen the contact between outside and inside spaces, and provide a good flow 
between the different living rooms.
