Industrial centers and main cities
Great Britain is one of the most powerful capitalist countries in Europe. There are many big industrial cities here, such as Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and other. London, its capital, is one of the biggest commercial centres and ports of the world. 10 million people live in London. The United Kingdom is one of the world’s largest exports of ships, aircraft, motor vehicles, electrical equipment, textiles and most types of machinery. Birmingham and Sheffield are known as the centres of iron and steel industry, steam engine and motor-cars and bicycles, rails, and nails are manufactured in the factories of the Black Country. It is Birmingham that is called so. Manchester is the centre of cotton industry and Leeds is the main centre of woollen industry in England. You know that the famous pop-group, the Beatles, came from Liverpool. But Liverpool is also known as the largest port of Western England. It is the first in Great Britain in exports and it comes the second after London in imports. Imports passing through Liverpool consist of cotton, wool, non-ferrous metals and oil. Exports consist of fabrics, textile machinery, electrical equipment and chemicals.
