INTRODUCTION
Riddles are short pieces the basis of which is witty metaphorical question that provides the answer. To find the answer – solution of a riddle, one should know how to compare life phenomena on the base of their affinity or similarity due to signs, traits, or characteristics. Specificity of riddles is that in their concealed allegorical form, an object or phenomenon is encrypted and one should find its original meaning. Therefore, some scientists analysing the literary form of riddles assert that “every riddle is composite and monomial parallelism, the second member of which is solution of a riddle”.
“Riddle is a genre of folk art, which remains to be one of the least developed. Studying English folk riddles allows us to consider the interaction of the language system and ethnos in dynamics and comprehend a speech phenomenon of folk culture and its influence on modern creative work and development of youth creative thinking. All these determine the topicality of the researched theme”. Riddles have its special place in folk literature. Folk literature is actually oral literature through which human beings express their thoughts and feelings with a distinctive style. As a sub-genre of oral literature, riddles are questions formed by benefiting from fictions, oppositions and sound plays. Mental traits, especially the one which enables people to solve problems distinguish them from animals. From the psychological point of view, people feel happy as they find answers. This feeling coming from the ability of reasoning prompts people to wonder more. That is why people are inclined to mysterious things that raise curiosity in them. Riddles are one of the best examples in which words are manipulated in a way to create mystery in folk literature. Hence, in folk literature, “mystery” is associated with riddles. Mystery causes excitement. Owing to this reason, riddles have become means of entertainment over time.
This research work is devoted to the study the translation peculiarities of riddles which were one of the most disputable and important problems of lexicology, semantics and translation.
The topicality of the research is determined by the following factors:
Necessity of studying main types, the historical development of riddles, the degree of investigation of translating English riddles into Uzbek and other languages
Necessity of finding alternatives of English riddles into Uzbek which have appropriate meanings and structures
Necessity of analyzing lingua- cultural peculiarities, similarities and differences of English and Uzbek riddles
Necessity of identifying semantic problems in the process of translation and giving solutions to them
Problem development status: In this scientific field a good many scientists and researchers have investigated: D. Dalaslan “ An analysis of the English translations of Erzurum folk riddles in the light of Raymond Van Den Broeck’s translation criticism model”; Van Herreweghe “ A Dutch translation of 15 old English riddles”; N. Davila “ Spanish and French translations of the riddles in the Hobbit there and back again”; E. Ashuraliyev “Xalq topishmoqlarining kognitiv strukturasi”; E. Tanirbergenova “ Stylistic features of Karakalpak Folk riddles” and etc.
The aim of the research is to translate English riddles into Uzbek as an alternative, to identify theoretical and practical ways to the problems in this process and find relevant solutions.
The tasks of the research:

  1. To study riddles as a branch of Folklore

  2. To study the historical development of riddles;

  3. To study types and peculiarities of English and Uzbek riddles

  4. To investigate the translation issues of riddles

  5. To master English and Uzbek riddles in literary works and their translation ways

The subject of the research is the translation peculiarities and problems of translating English folk riddles into Uzbek.
The object of the research is English and Uzbek riddles
The novelty of the research includes in the studying the translation variations of English riddles in the Uzbek language, analyzing them and giving possible solutions if the translations are not suitable for the original ones. Since riddles are widely used in society, and requests wisdom and resourcefulness from readers or listeners, the necessity of investigating riddles and translating them appropriately is very vital.
Materials of the research work: books of riddles, scientific books, dictionaries, dissertations, internet resources, researches on the usage of riddles.
Methodological basis of the given research is composed with the following scientific works: Ashurova D.U. “Text linguistics”, M. Rambaud “Basic semantics”, H. Pardede “Semantics”, Venutti L. “The translation studies”, Proshina Z. “The theory of translation”, Basnett S. “Translation studies”, G. Paul “Translation in practice”, S. Colina “Fundamentals of translation”, A. Schaff “Introduction to semantics”.
Theoretical value: The investigation of translating problems of English riddles into Uzbek contributes for further developments of lexicology, sociolinguistics, semantics and the field of translation of English and Uzbek studies.
Practical value: This work can be an invaluable source for translators, English learners, teachers, researchers and students as well.
The structure of the work: The structure is composed of the following parts: introduction, three main chapters, conclusion, references and appendix.
