The fecal coliform count is an indicator of pollution of water by human and animal/waterfowl excrement and hence the risk of gastrointestinal illness to swimmers. Beach count warnings are posted when counts exceed a 30 day geometric mean of 200 fecal coliforms per 100 ml of water, when values fluctuate dramatically, or when there is other evidence of beach contamination.
