ASPHALTENE CONTENT ( D 6560, IP 143)
The carbon residues of petroleum and petroleum products serve as an indication of the propensity of the sample to form carbonaceous deposits (thermal coke) under the influence of heat. Tests for Conradson carbon residue, Ramsbottom carbon residue, the micro carbon residue, and Asphaltene content are sometimes included in inspection data on petroleum. The data give an indication of the amount of coke that will be formed during thermal processes as well as an indication of the amount of high-boiling constituents in petroleum.
