3.2. What we need to deliver 
To recap, we have two main items to deliver: 

the effective minimisation of inputs through 
good systems and appropriate designs and

decision support systems to minimise risk.
4. Minimisation of inputs 
I must admit to having some personal difficulty in 
deciding the content of this section. My background 
led me repeatedly to the subject of soil compaction 
and I kept asking myself, “am I over-emphasising its
importance? ” My conclusion was that I am not. 
Having recently attended a tillage demonstration and 
also having mentioned the subject of waste above, I 
considered I would be ignoring what I believe to

be one of the key areas in which we can achieve a 
significant reduction in inputs. Soil compaction is
inextricably linked to waste in terms of energy inputs, 
inefficient water use and crop yield depression, and to 
environmental issues such as soil erosion, organic 
matter loss and greenhouse gases. I therefore make 
no apology in addressing the subject of soil
compaction before moving on to cultivation per se. 
4.1. The role of soil compaction in
minimising inputs 
The stresses imposed by modern agriculture 
-

shows that over the past 60 years, although tyre 
inflation pressures have remained much the same, the 
loads carried by these tyres have increased 
dramaticall y. At 0.6 m depth for example, imposed 
stresses have risen by a factor of around five. This 
may not always lead to damage at this depth, since 
many subsoils may be strong enough to withstand 
these loads.
 
However, the potential for damage is present and will 
occur frequently, particularly at shallower depths in 
the profile. 
We can address the problem to some extent by 
reducing loads and the pressure exerted by tyres at 
the soil surface. However, to do this we need 
to understand at least a little about how load,
tyres and soil interact. I find the representation
