I would like to come back to what Prof. 
McKay has said for Australia, and remind the 
auditorium that the standard machine 
working widths of large sprayers - fertiliser 
spreaders - is 36 m, and this you have to 
compare with the 12 m of the gantry. So I 
think that we really have to follow the idea of 
controlled traffic lanes, and I think in the 
future we will use DGPS in any case, so it will 
be really very easy to find the lanes and

maybe to have automatic steering - there will 
be a lot of change. Nevertheless we will have 
compaction even with 36 m, but we still have 
the idea of the one-lane ploughing. I believe in 
Switzerland there is a rate of something like 
50% one-lane ploughing, which really is also 
a certain solution for the compaction systems.

I was quite interested by Prof. Bourarach’s 
presentation. I like his demonstration that 
many times, and especially for soil cultivation, 
new ideas are old ones. And it is good that 
this is coming from him, because I think that 
each developing agricultural system has to 
design its own procedures - has to invent the 
new for that local place or to invest the old 
for those local needs. Because in such 
complex matters - and soil cultivation is one - 
solutions from Germany or the UK have to be 
appropriately considered before being 
proposed elsewhere, regardless of the 
international guidelines that a group like us 
might issue. In connection with this matter I 
would stress that in so-called innovation 
process science, there are two basic 
constraints which are always emphasised. 
When you consider a new innovation, you 
have to take into account the local 
manufacturers’ know-how and expertise, and 
the local users’ know-how and expertise. 
Whatever you might want them to do.
