CHRISTOPHER SEFCHECK PAUL WARE JODI MERWIN Principal Associate Principal Associate Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians of the Class of 2021,
The English department at the high school is committed to fostering a love of reading, not only as a tool to academic success, but as a source of enjoyment throughout students’ lives. The department is also dedicated to meeting the goals of reading that are a part of the ninth grade curriculum and the Pennsylvania Department of Education Common Core Standards as well as the upcoming Keystone Examinations.
In an effort to promote reading in our student body, the English department, with the approval of The West Jefferson Hills Board of School Directors, has established a summer reading program for all students. The books in the program have been chosen with care in order to meet the district’s goals: reading independently, reading to analyze and interpret literature, and reading for pleasure.
The summer reading selection for ninth graders entering honors English is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This science fiction piece allows students to contemplate the role of books and technology in their lives. It also meets the criterion for making reading a pleasurable experience.
Students will be expected to read the novel over the summer and complete an assignment in preparation for the first day of school. The directions for the assignment are attached and will be introduced and distributed at the end of the students’ eighth grade year. The assignment (and this letter) will also be posted on my webpage at http://fluhme.wikispaces.com/Summer+Reading+Assignment beginning July 1, 2017. Copies of the book and the assignment will also be available from the high school guidance department. These books are the property of the school district, so they must be returned to TJ along with the required assignment on the first day of school in the fall. Please note that this summer reading selection will be part of the instruction at the beginning of the year and will be included in the midterm examination.
I hope that you, as parents, will partner with me in helping to instill in our students an appreciation of reading and a desire to succeed academically at TJHS. Together, we will help them to recognize the value of literature. Please encourage your children to read this novel and make certain that their assignment is completed for the beginning of the year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Fluhme

Summer Reading Assignments
Welcome to Thomas Jefferson High School! Between now and the beginning of the school year in August, please read the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 is a work of science fiction depicting a frightening image of the future.
You will be responsible for completing a project for the first day of school. Once you begin school in August, expect other assignments to follow including a reading quiz. Please be prepared for the first day of school. Start the school year in a positive way.
The novel must be returned to your ninth grade English teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School at the beginning of the school year.
PROCEDURE FOR ASSIGNMENT:
1. At the completion of your reading, use approximately 12” x 18” construction paper or poster board to complete ONE of the following projects (see the examples below each choice):
-
Bil-l-l-l-l-l-boards. In Montag’s society roadside billboards are 200 feet long so that they can be seen as drivers whiz by. Design a model (on a smaller scale) of such a billboard, perhaps to advertise Denhams’s Dentrifice or the TV Walls. Alternatively, create the wanted posters that may have gone up on the day Montag became a fugitive. Make the advertisement as visual as possible so that it reaches all the inexperienced readers in Montag’s world.
-
Fire Signs. Imagine that you are a costume designer for a stage production or movie adaptation of Fahrenheit 451. Create sketches of Montag’s helmet and uniform, including the salamander and phoenix symbols. You may even want to fully create one of the symbols, cutting it out in felt or another medium.
-
Dog-eared. Create a diagram or drawing of what you envision the Mechanical Hound to look like. Label all of the special features that make the Mechanical Hound so terrifying to Montag.
-
Forget-Me-Not. If you prefer something less visual, i.e., no artistic ability required. How hard do you think it would be to memorize an entire book? Try your hand at memorizing just one small portion of a novel. Everyone knows the first paragraph of Fahrenheit 451, as it is just one sentence, “It was a pleasure to burn.” Now, memorize the second paragraph and give a recital of it for the class on the first day of school. Do you think you could manage to memorize the whole book?
2. Display the title of the novel and the author’s name on your project.
3. This will be an evaluated assignment, so do your best, most creative, and neatest work.
