Pascal’s adding machine: In 1642, Blasé Pascal, a French mathematician invented the first mechanical calculator. This made use of a number of wheels to perform the operations. Multiplication was performed by a number of additions and subtractions.
Punched cards: between 1802 and 1804 Joseph Jacquard invented punched cards. This was originally invented to improve the production of woven cloth. The main feature of Jacquard, loom was a series of punched, cards strung tightly side in a long strip. The cards were automatically fed to control looms weaving action. Then, each wrap would be raised or not according to the rule:

Hole in the card- wrap thread not raised

No hole in the card- wrap thread raised

This further led to the development of the binary system. Binary means 2 numbered.

Francis Bacon in 1623 made use of binary codes for number representation.
