NATIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE
PRESCRIPTION OF PSYCHOTROPIC
MEDICATIONS FOR CHILDREN
In both the USA and Britain, the benefit of the full
range of psychotropic medications has been gradu-
ally appreciated. However, it is widely recognized
that the use of psychotropic medication in the
USA is far more extensive than in Britain. While
it is important to understand better the multiple
reasons that psychopharmacological treatment is
more widespread in the USA, one reason for this
difference is that with more experience of pre-
scribing psychotropic medication clinicians have
personally observed the clinical benefit for some
children. Given this observation, many clinicians
