Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) constitute a diagnostic spectrum of variable severity along
at least three dimensions: deficits in social communication, poor language and non-verbal
communicative abilities, and circumscribed interests and rigid, repetitive and stereotyped
behaviours.

Diagnosis should rely on information from several sources: a parental report of the
developmental history, together with observations of the child undertaking structured social
tasks, and in the company of peers. The particular pattern of symptoms that presents in
