2.4 Film Studies


In this research, film studies are necessary to help the writer to complete the analysis. A film is a set of moving and talking pictures which we required to see and hear it in order to understand the content of the film (Soles, 2009, p.41). A film study refers to explore the meaning of the film and build the conceptual to understand the relationship between the film to reality, arts, and the viewers. Film uses the component of the visual elements such as line, form, mass, volume and texture.


''Film speaks in a "language of the senses" its flowing and sparkling stream of image, its compelling pace and natural rhythms, and its pictorial style are all part of this nonverbal language." (Boggs, 1991, p.82)
According to the quotation above, a visual element is the main meaning of the film and more powerful than communication. In comparison to other art forms, a film is unique because it takes benefit of all the properties, motion and qualities. Thus if we want to analyze a film appropriately, we should watch the film in two ways. First, we can watch the film in usual way and concern about the plot element, emotional effect, and the center idea. Second, after we get what really happens in the film, we can focus on the how and why of the filmmaker's art. (Boggs, 1991, pg. 2-5)
