Chapter I. Jack London’s life and works

Importance of the theme. The theme of this course paper is the critical realism which was introduced by American writers, in particular Jack London specialized in this sphere and utilized this realism in his writings. I will explore critical realism in “Martin Edin” by Jack London. because this work of Jack London is a particular example of our topic. Finally, the importance of studying the topic, critical realism, is that it is the way of learning people’s lifestyle and wishes in that time. Although strictly speaking, realism is a technique, it also denotes a particular kind of subject matter, especially the representation of middle-class life. A reaction against romanticism, an interest in scientific method, the systematizing of the study of documentary history, and the influence of rational philosophy all affected the rise of realism.
