F, the two-position steam valve opens and remains fully open as
long as freezing air is sensed. Because the condensate represents the
real freezing problem, the steam trap must be oversized—for about 3
times the design flow rate—and a vacuum breaker must be provided.
Note that condensing steam may create subatmospheric pressures in
the coil such that vertical drop must be used to create pressure for
condensate movement. A low-temperature safety device is provided to
stop the supply fan if freezing air is sensed downstream of the coil.
The system just described is effective in preventing freeze-up but
may produce excessively high temperatures in the air leaving the coil.
To provide better control of downstream temperatures, the system
shown in Fig. 10.16 is used. The coil is controlled as before, but face
and bypass dampers have been added, modulated by a downstream
thermostat. The bypass damper must be sized to have the same wide-
open air pressure drop (100 percent flow through the bypass) as the
coil-and-face damper combination at 100 percent flow through the coil.
For water coils, a different scheme must be used. Figure 10.17 shows
the traditional method of preventing freeze-up in water coils. The
three-way valve is modulated in response to a downstream thermo-
