Geometry relates to the space available, including the space for pip-
ing connection and maintenance. Geometry also affects water veloci-
ties and therefore pressure losses. Fewer and longer tubes lead to
higher velocities but double or half circuits can be used for adjustment.
The airflow rate and conditions determine the total heat to be removed
as well as the design ADP needed. Chilled water temperatures deter-
mine the water flow rate and indicate whether the desired ADP is
possible. Coil characteristics include fin spacing, rows of tubes in the
direction of airflow, and the
k
factor at design conditions. The
k
factor
will vary with the amount of dehumidifying being done because a wet
coil surface transfers more heat. The
k
factor for evaporating refrig-
erant in a DX coil is greater than that for a water coil, while the
k
factor for brine is less.
Most coil manufacturers can and will provide computerized coil se-
lections, or software to be used in the design office to make selections
based on the above criteria. It is also possible for the designer to make
an accurate manual selection based on data in the manufacturer’s cat-
alog. One general equation which is often used is
