portion of a standard sample of dust measured by weight. This, of
course, puts the emphasis on removing the large dust particles and
considerable amounts of fine dust get by this type of filter, which is
used primarily in residential and light commercial applications. Most
types of ‘‘throwaway’’ and ‘‘cleanable’’ filters are in this class. These
are also called
roughing
filters when used ahead of other types.
Dust spot filters are tested and rated by introducing a standard
sample of ‘‘atmospheric’’ dust upstream of the filter. Downstream of
the filter, a fine paper filter is installed, and after a known amount of
dust has been fed into the system, the paper filter is tested for a de-
crease in light transmission due to dust which was not removed by
the test filter. Currently, many specifications require filters with 40 to
50 percent dust spot efficiencies, which will provide a high degree of
cleanliness. Electrostatic filters include fine wires with a high-voltage
charge installed in the airstream. This puts a static charge on the
