Ch 21: Assessment in L2 Classrooms in Celce-Murcia et al. (2014): Please read from pp. 322 – 331 .
Name: Ro’ziboeva N Group #: 128 Date:19.04 21
Before reading:
1. Recall your own experiences with assessment as a learner. Consider how you felt, what you think you learned from the assessment experience. Now, create two lists: one list describing methods with positive effects and the other describing methods with negative effects. Which practices do you feel helped you learn? Which ones were less helpful and why?

    • Your answer:

    • Positive : especially grammar translation method-asy to find my mistakes,(multiple choice tasks) , gaining high score

    • Negative : task based method – challenges in following instructions, only doing true false , or abc tasks

While or after reading:
2. Read carefully about assessments of learning and assessments for learning on p.322 and answer the following Qs.

  1. What is the difference between assessments of learning and assessments for learning? Explain using your own words. In your response, use the words ‘summative’ and ‘formative.’

    • Your answer:

Assessment of learning is the way of evaluating what learnners learned after the period of learning. Assessmentbof learning learners have been checked after learning. Assessment for learning is the process of chexking what they have been learning during the process of explanation. So we can say assessment of learning is -after chexking, asessment for leaening is - while checking

  1. Which type of assessments are/were more prominent in your L2 learning context?

    • Your answer: We use both according to the lerning spheres. In schools (at my work) for assessing second language learning, asessment OF learning is more convinient and common whereas as a second language learner in our classes assessment FOR learning is more prominent.

3. What are advantages and challenges of a selected-response format and constructed-response format? Explain using your own words.

Selected-response format

Constructed-response format

Advantages

Easy way of scoring , can be answered quickly, covering range of curriculum in a short time

Demomatrate complex, in depth understanding, lack of guessing corrext answer, mktivating learners, using their own creativty

Challenges

Guessing, , constrains students to single appropriate answers,

More time to consuming score, challemging of scoring rubrics in a short time

4. Read pp. 324-325 about linking assessment to learning and answer the Qs:

  1. Why is it important to align the learning objectives, classroom activities (i.e., what is taught), and assessment?

  1. Grab any English textbook and find a learning objective (or create your own). Like Figure 6 on p. 325, briefly describe one classroom activity and assessment that will align with the learning objective.

Learning objective

Classroom activity

Assessment

Stidents will expand thier speking skills

First teacher shows a picture about the topic and they will guess it . Then they discuss the topic. According to the theme learners need to answer teachers questions by orally and share their ideas through the class. They make small debate, discuasions and exchange opinions

According to the topic learners write what new words they have come across, which word is difficult for finding its translation and they have to find definition of the words in the texts
Then they have to write all learned new words list with its definition

5. Performance assessments are discussed on pp. 328-330. Read this part carefully and answer the following Qs:

  1. Why is it important to have a scoring guide in performance assessment (speaking & wpriting)? In your response, use the word ‘reliable’ or ‘reliability.’

    • Your answer: as the answers are receptive the process require “ reliability” for assessing Student uses ‘reliable’ information and teacher uses ‘reliability’

  1. Various types of scoring guides are discussed: checklists, rating scale, holistic rubrics, and analytic rubrics. Out of this four, which one(s) might be most useful for your current or future students? Explain why.

    • Your answer: In my opinion analytic ribrics may be more useful for furute students. Because in this scoring guide includes specifix creteria related to various qualities of language proficiency.
