of Education has set a goal of
resuming full-time in-person
instruction
at
all
public
schools in September, as thou-
sands of staffers have been
vaccinated and safety and
testing plans have been for-
malized.
Calling the middle-school
reopening very successful,
Mayor Bill de Blasio said he is
pushing to bring even more
students who are opting to re-
main in remote classes back
before the end of the school
year.
The Democratic mayor said
at a press conference on Mon-
day that reopening schools is
critical to New York City’s re-
covery from the pandemic. He
said students need “to be back
where loving, caring adults,
trained
professionals,
are
there to support them.”

lic schools in November after
the city’s Covid-19 positivity
rate surpassed 3%, leading to
fully remote learning for all
The city’s seven-day aver-
age Covid-19 positivity rate
was 6.39% as of Friday, city
data showed.
New York City has bol-
stered its testing capacity in
schools in recent weeks by hir-
ing additional staff to conduct
weekly Covid-19 testing for the
reopening of more schools.
Department of Education
officials said school sports will
return in mid-April, beginning
with strength conditioning for
student athletes. Competitive
play will resume in May and
for the first time will continue
throughout the summer, the
DOE said, and both in-person
and remote learners will be el-
igible. Weekly testing and
mask-wearing will be manda-
tory, and spectators won’t be
allowed, the agency said.
Mr. de Blasio said he hopes
that resuming sports will
boost student morale, noting
that there will be an emphasis
on moving sports outdoors. He
asked parents to respect the
DOE’s rules barring spectators.
“This is about giving the
kids a chance to participate,
and then as things get health-
ier and healthier, the city will
be able to open it up even
more,” he said.
