Expressing quantities in Engineering

Whole numbers are easy to express. But marry involve partial quantities. Engineers must understand how to express parts of a whole.
Some quantities appear as percents. Example: The compound is 80 out of 100 pts lead. The compound is 80% lead.
These quantities are easy to convert into decimal numbers. The percent simply appears after a decimal point.
Example: The compound is 0.80 parts lead.
A fraction is another form.
Example: The compound is ⁸/10 lead. Or, reduce the fraction to its lowest form: %
NOTE: Some fractions represent quantities larger than one. An example is^1/2. These improper fractions are often converted into mixed numbers: 2 1/2

Dear Mr. Murphy,
Thank you for the new tools. Measurements are much easier with the new calipers. The hacksaw is much sharper than the old one. And the new vice and pliers hold materials very securely.
Also, thank you for offering new hammers. Our sledge hammers are worn down. And some of our ball peen hammers are missing. We would appreciate some new ones. Most importantly, though, we need screwdrivers. We have plenty of Phillips screwdrivers. But our latest project uses different screws. We need more slotted screwdrivers to complete the job quickly. Also, we need new sizes of box wrenches and socket wrenches. Thank you, hacksaw
