The Literature o f the Norman Period (12,h - 13th
centuries).
When King Alfred died, the account of the wars with the Danes
showed how many suffered in that age, how bitter, insecure and
cruel life was. Parties oftheNorthmen sailed rouiid Scotland and
over to Ireland. Others sailed south across the channel i:o France.
They conquered the north o f France and settled there. In the next
hundred years they came to be called Normans, and their country
Normandy.
In the middle o f the 11th century the internal feuds among the
Anglo-Saxon earls weakened the country. The Normals did not
