Idioms that occurred in
connection with some cultural phenomena
The contribution
which is made by culture in formation and development of language is rather big.
The famous writers and poets, composing the masterpieces, introduced and
recommended new expressions which so strongly took roots subsequently in
language that in the present accepted the status of phraseological units. To wear
one's heart upon one's sleeve is literally translated as "to carry heart on a sleeve".
In Russian there is a similar phraseological unit of
"душа нараспашку".
There
is a version that the author of this idiom - William Shakespeare who for the first
time used this expression in one of the plays (see appendix I of fig. 1) [5]. The
idiom of
"piece of cake"
(piece of cake) - is used quite often and means
"is what
can be made easily that it is possible to make even the closed eyes".
For the
first time this phrase sounded in the poem by the American poet Orgden Nash
"Primrose path" where he exclaims
"life is piece of cake!".
Since then this idiom
is often quoted [10].
“As cool as a cucumber”
can be compared to the Russian
phraseological unit
"спокойный как удав"
. English-language expression goes
back to the collection by John Gaye in which there is a poem "the new song with
new comparisons" of 1732. Here was the first use of the phrase
―I … cool as a
cucumber‖ should see ―The rest of womankind‖ [11].
Idioms that developed with the development of the language
All the known fact that English is subdivided into British American and
Australian, also demonstrate that each of them is unique not only the
pronunciation, jargons, a slang, but also assumes the special idioms as each
country has the settled life, the history and culture.
