May in the Shop
Emerging High School Artists Exhibit
Student art from Mount Dora, Eustis and Tavares High Schools will be available for viewing in our shop throughout the month of May. The opening reception will coincide with Mount Dora's 2nd Friday Art Stroll, scheduled for Friday, May 13th, from five to eight p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Please join us and meet some inspiring teachers and their talented students.

Mount Dora High School is home to many talents, as well as their inspiring teacher, Caryn Goldstein. The art program at Mount Dora High School offers a diverse set of arts including 2D, 3D, ceramics and photography. Students learn proper techniques to advance their skills towards a career in art. Goldstein provides each student with personal assistance when needed, leading them to ultimate success. The following students will be exhibiting their work from Mount Dora High School: Morgan Maguire, Hope McKinney, Steven Pinto, Loren Repollo and Candida Vega.

Tavares High School Art program has been under the leadership of Esty Mickens for the past 6 years and she has mentored students through basic to advanced art techniques. Her AP 2D/3D Studio program has grown over the past 6 years. Many of the students in the program have received scholarships and won prizes for their artwork. The following Tavares High students will exhibit work: Angelica Brown, Kelly Cavaliere, Georgia Cruz, Jolena Eserto, Jenna Girello, Jorda Lozzi, Mariah Villalobos and Veronica Vintilla.

Eustis High School Art program is under the leadership of Sara Bruce and she brings her skills as an artist and sculptor to her students. The students in the exhibit have aspirations of careers in creative arts and strive to achieve the skills and portfolios to compete nationally. The following students will be exhibiting work from Eustis High School: Chelsea Chapa, Daniella Garcia, Nina Krentel, Brooke Jensen, Lindsey Sanders and Garett Vekaik.

Laura Howell at SoBo Gallery
During May
Laura Howell's photographic image "Blue Nautilus" will be
featured at the SoBo Gallery presented by the Winter Garden
Art Association. The theme of the show is "Of Inspiration & Influence."
Laura invites everyone to attend the First Thursday opening
reception at SoBo Gallery on Thursday, May 5 from 5:30 - 8 p.m.
The gallery is located at 127 South Boyd Street in Winter Garden.
It is the old fire station across from the public parking lot.
The exhibit will be there throughout the month of May.

Our active artists
Sharon Repple's painting, "Across the Marsh," was awarded 3rd place in the Ocala Art Group City Hall "Art in Motion" show. Her panting will hang until May 12th at Ocala City Hall.
Laura Howell's image "Flower Circle" won 2nd Place in the Creative category at the Orlando Camera Club competition for April.

"Lost Footprint" Exhibit at
Mount Cora Center for the Arts
Jennifer Harper will have an entry in the upcoming 'Lost Footprint ' exhibit at the mount Dora center for the arts. The juried exhibit will feature work of 25 artists with subjects of a bygone or simpler time. The exhibit will run May 13 thru June 16. Opening Reception, May 13 from 6 -8 p.m.
The "Lost Footprint" exhibit is intended to push participants to think about the objects and lifestyles we have left behind or are losing.
When was the last time you used a map, played a tape or flipped through a telephone book? Technology and nostalgia continually urge us to evaluate our place in the world and think beyond our own lifetime. This exhibit denotes the fact that these eras will never be seen again and encourages viewers to look at common cast off objects or notions from uncommon perspectives.

Marilyn Dodge Scholarship
The Marilyn Dodge Scholarship was established in 2012, to honor founding Artist Associate Marilyn Dodge, who passed away in September, 2012. She was a talented artist who specialized in jewelry creations and was well known for her antique silverware bracelets. Marilyn was always willing to volunteer "above and beyond the call of duty." She had a great sense of humor, was a joy to be with and will be remembered for her zest for life.
Artisans on Fifth pays tribute to Marilyn's memory by supporting the Women's Committee of Fine Arts (WCFA) of Mount Dora in Marilyn's honor.
Each year, the WCFA provides scholarships for local students of the arts. Since its inception in 1977, the WCFA has awarded over $185,000 to students in the Golden Triangle area. This upcoming year, the WCFA Annual Scholarship Award Luncheon will be held on May 13 at 11:30 at Lake Receptions.
Artisans will award its Marilyn Dodge Scholarship to an art student, chosen by the WCFA. There will be many other scholarships awarded, and there will be performances and displays by young artists.

With posters designed by Gwen Hertz, our new sign has a solid base guaranteeing it will not tip over. The sign was assembled and installed by Mike Hertz. The sign and posters were ordered from Next Level Custom Signs.

Mt. Dora 2nd Friday Art Stroll
Join us Friday, May 13 from 6 - 8 pm.in beautiful downtown Mount Dora for the Monthly Second Friday Mt.Dora Art Stroll.
This month, we'll honor student artists from Mount Dora, Eustis and Tavares High Schools with a reception during the Art Stroll.
The FREE Art Stroll meanders through downtown Mount Dora offering a festive evening of art, music and hors d'oeuvres, to showcase regional art at several walkable venues.
Stop by Artisans on fifth. In addition to larger pieces of artwork, many smaller and affordably priced items such as jewelry, soaps, greeting cards and decorative accessories are available.
There will be light refreshments at Artisans, so stop in that evening.
Maps may be picked up at any location along the stroll. The main locations feature art from independent artists and those locations' guest artists.

What A Relief...
The technique of printing designs from planks of wood is one of the oldest methods of making art in multiple copies. The Chinese began using woodcuts to decorate textiles in the 5th century. In Europe, printing from wood blocks on textiles began in France and Germany at the end of the 14th century. The development of printing from movable type led to widespread use of woodcut illustrations in books.
In the 19th century, fine artists rediscovered the expressive potential of woodcuts. Norwegian artist Edvard Munch began to incorporate the grain of softwood into his designs, and the French painter Paul Gauguin achieved new tones and textures by treating the wood surface with sandpaper. The German Expressionists of the 20th century, inspired by the vitality of medieval woodcuts, gouged and roughly hewed the wood to achieve a brutal effect. In the United States, woodcuts and wood engraving gained importance in the 1920s and '30s through the illustrations of Rockwell Kent and artists working in the Work Projects Administration. After World War II artists such as Misch Kohn, Leonard Baskin, and Carol Summers further developed the woodcut medium in the United States

We are so proud to be such an integral part of the arts community here in beautiful Mt Dora. Artisans on Fifth is only six years old and the possibilities are endless. A big thank you goes out to the people of Mt Dora, and the Mt Dora Center for the Arts for their continued support, we wouldn't be here without them.
We want to say a special thank you to Mount Dora Community Trust for their continued support of Artisans on Fifth through grants and sponsorships. Artisans on Fifth believes in supporting our community by giving back through many avenues. These include an annual art scholarship, the Marilyn Dodge Scholarship, for a high school student in the visual arts and Bra-Vo, another annual event that raises funds for breast cancer testing and treatment in Lake County. Mount Dora Community Trust has acknowledged our commitment to the community through their ongoing support. Our sincere thanks to the Trust for their generosity.

Mount Dora Center for the Arts
The Mount Dora Center for the Arts is a non-profit collaborative leader, which plays an integral role in the community as a multifaceted community center providing: fine art gallery exhibitions, education programs for all ages and levels, Art of the Deal - an annual fine art auction, monthly Art Strolls and the Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival, which brings together nationally acclaimed artists for a weekend-long arts experience. The Art Center's Summer Art Camp may be the most impactful contribution to the community. For seven weeks each summer children have a place to be creative and thrive while having fun painting, sculpting and crafting. "Be a Part of the Art" and join today.

The Mount Dora Center for the Arts is always open to new classes, workshops, and lectures. Artists, retired professionals, and instructors interested in sharing their knowledge with youth, teens, adults or seniors should submit proposals to nancy@mountdoracenterforthearts.org.
The Center all need volunteers to work in several areas.

Artisans on Fifth is inviting artists in any media to apply to be an Associate. We are currently taking applications for new artists to join us as soon as space becomes available. 
We feature fine art and handcrafted items by local talented artists and craftspeople in the following categories: basketry, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, fused and cast glass, oil painting, mixed media, glass and gemstone jewelry, photography, ceramics, fiber art, wearable art, pottery, wood, fine silver jewelry, stained glass, paper, and painted bottles.
The shop is staffed by the members, who frequently offer demonstrations of their work during regular shop hours.

About Us
Artisans on Fifth located at 134 E. Fifth Avenue is on the downstairs level of the historic brick building occupied by the Mount Dora Center for the Arts. Artisans is the only artist cooperative in Mount Dora, FL. All artwork is designed and hand made by approximately 25 local artists. Artwork includes oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor paintings, unique and unusual jewelry, fiber art, fused and cast glass, wood, stained glass, pottery and more. "Artisans of Mount Dora, Inc.", is a Florida not-for-profit corporation doing business as Artisans on fifth.
Hours are: Sun. and Mon. 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tues - Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours for special events.
