Spontaneous flora and vegetation of the Main botanical garden of Kazakhstan:

The article analyses the spontaneous flora and vegetation of the Main Botanical garden of Almaty 
city. Spontaneous flora of the Botanical Garden listing 175 species of vascular plants belonging to 148 gene-
ra and 55 families including native plants, escapees from cultivation, and alien species. The sources forming 
the composition of the spontaneous flora were analyzed. Spontaneous species of the Botanical Garden are 
grouped into four categories according to scale of invasiveness. In plantations with dense tree canopy herba-
ceous layer is formed by native plants; in open areas – by alien species in all layers which become more 
competitive in urban conditions (
Robinia pseudoacacia, Acer negundo, Prunus spinosa, Arrhenatherum ela-
tius, Asclepias syriaca
). Species such as 
Ulmus pumila, Malus domestica, Acer negundo
can displace natural 
communities and dominate in natural habitats. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid these types of plantings on 
the borders of the natural ecosystems.
