CANYON CAMP

All units using the camp must check in at the camp office with the Campmaster upon arrival. Do not send a Scout to do this, it must be a leader.
All buildings have electricity, wood heat, extra firewood, and cleaning tools. (Note: Left and right are as you stand facing the front of the cabin).
Water: An all-weather pump located next to the tree line near the parade grounds. Well location is marked on the map. Bring own water containers.

Telephone: Telephone is located in the camp office (first building on the left as you come into the main area of camp). Must use credit card or call collect.

Dumpster: There is a dumpster next to the visitor’s latrine in the upper parking lot across from the Rawleigh Cabin.

Firewood: Firewood is located by each cabin. DO NOT BRING WOOD FROM HOME.

Hiking Trails: There is a network of marked hiking trails throughout camp. These trails are usually impassable in winter.

Sledding: When there is snow, the sledding is excellent at camp.


Founder’s Lodge


(also known as the Handicraft Lodge)

Location: Large cabin at the top of the parade ground directly uphill from the pool.

Capacity: It is set up for 30 (15 double bunks).

Heat: Wood burning stove.

Firewood: In wood shed to the left of the cabin.

Cook stove: Wood burner

Latrine: Staff area latrine or visitor’s latrine may be used. The staff latrine is to the left of the cabin and is the second small building on the left in the staff area. There is electricity for lighting in the staff latrine. Visitor’s latrine is in the parking lot.

Other: There is no road to the cabin. Use discretion if you choose to attempt to drive to the cabin. You can unload on the road directly below the cabin or drive around to the left side of the shower house to unload. Electricity for lights only.
Jamboree Cabin

Location: Drive through camp and take the fork in the road to the right at the pool.

Capacity: It is set up for 20 (10 double bunks).

Heat: Wood burner

Firewood: On the porch of the building and stacked to the left.

Cook stove: Wood burner

Latrine: The closest latrine is at the campsite behind the cabin or in the staff area. Follow the timberline to the right of cabin to the staff area. It’s the third building on the right. There is electricity for lighting in the staff latrine.

Other: In the winter there is no place to turn a trailer around near the cabin. The road ends at the building. Electricity for lights only.


Other Facilities



Adirondacks: These are three-sided, roofed log buildings that sleep two. Canyon Camp has (7) adirondacks that can be moved to different locations in the camp.
Campsites: There are (12) areas in camp that can be used for tent camping.
Canoes and Trailers:

Canyon has (16) canoes and (1) canoe trailer that are available for troops to rent.











CAMP LOWDEN

All units using the camp must check in with the Ranger upon arrival. Do not send a Scout to do this, it must be a leader. Please ring the bell at the Ranger’s office and wait for the door to be answered.
All buildings have electricity, wood heat (some have propane heat), firewood, and cleaning tools. (Note: Left and right are as you stand facing the front of the cabin).
Troop trailer can be pulled to the campsite, weather and road conditions permitting. All vehicles must be parked in the parking lot.
Water: There are three (3) all-weather wells. They are: 1) Main Lodge well to the west end of the building; 2) Ranger campsite; and 3) Thunderhawk campsite (see the map). Bring own water containers.

Telephone: The emergency phone is located in the Rangers office, as you first come into camp (northeast corner of the parking lot). Please ring the bell and wait for the door to be answered. Calls must be credit card or call collect.

Dumpster: The dumpster is located at the northeast corner of the parking lot near the kiosk.

Firewood: Firewood is in a metal box near each cabin. DO NOT BRING WOOD FROM HOME.

Hiking Trails: There is a network of marked hiking trails through out the camp and the surrounding state forest. Camp Lowden is noted for its Blackhawk Trail.

Main Lodge


Location: This rectangular building is 70 yards west of the parking lot by the camp bell.

Capacity: Can hold up to 24 people. No bunks – mattresses only.

Heat: Fireplace is located in the middle the building. It is also heated with propane.

Cook stove: None

Latrine: The closest latrine is the visitor’s latrine by the northwest corner of the parking lot near the service road.

Other: There is electricity for lights as well as outlets.


Amerock Lodge


Location: This rectangular building is 150 yards west of the parking lot near Gilwell Field. The service road from the southeast corner of the parking lot passes by the building.

Capacity: Can hold up to 30 people. No bunks – mattresses only.

Heat: Fireplace is located at one end of the building. It is also heated with propane.

Cook Stove: A propane stove and refrigerator are located in the kitchen.

Latrine: The closest latrine is in Ranger campsite 350 yards from the southwest corner of the building.

Other: There is electricity for lights as well as outlets.

Weinke Lodge

(also known as the Handicraft Lodge)

Location: This rectangular building is 150 feet from the southwest end of the parking lot.

Capaclty: Can hold 15 people. No bunks – mattresses only.

Heat: Propane heat. No fireplace.

Cook Stove: None

Latrine: Closest latrine is Trailblazer campsite.

Other: There is electricity for lights as well as outlets.
Frontiersman Building

(Frontier Campsite)

Location: A large rectangle shelter located 100 yards from the south end of the parking lot.

Capacity: Set up for 24 (12 double bunks)

Heat: Fireplace is located at one end of the building and a small free standing wood

stove at the other end.

Cook stove: None

Latrine: The latrine is located in the campsite.

Other: There is electricity for lights only.

Winnebago Cabin


(Winnebago Campsite)

Location: Large rectangle shelter 250 yards from the south end of the parking lot.

Capacity: Set up for 24 (12 double bunks)

Heat: Fireplace is located at one end of the building and a small free standing wood

stove at the other end.



Cook stove: None

Latrine: The latrine is located in the campsite.

Other: There is electricity for lights only.

Atkinson Building


(Trailblazer Campsite)

Location: Octagon shaped shelter 250 yards from the parking lot, which was built in memory of Roger H. Atkinson, a Pilot Officer in the Eagle Squadron (RAF), who died in 1941. He was an Eagle Scout from Troop #3.

Capacity: Set up for 12 (6 double bunks)

Heat: Wood burning open fireplace located in the center of the building.

Cook stove: There is no cook stove other then the fireplace and the fire pit outside of the building.

Latrine: The latrine is located in the campsite.

Other: There is electricity for lights only.

Kabel Building


(Riverview Campsite)

Location: Is located 400 yards from the parking lot. The service road from the SW corner of the parking lot passes the Main Lodge and Amerock building.

Capacity: Set up to hold 12 (6 double bunks)

Heat: Free standing wood stove.

Cook stove: None

Latrine: Location of the nearest latrine is in the Riverview campsite.

Other: There is electricity for lights only.


Other Facilities


Campsites: There are (13) established campsites in camp that can be used for tent camping.

Canoes and Trailers: Lowden has (30) canoes and (2) trailers that are available for rental.

Carroll County Cabin


18682 Indian Trail Road, Mount Carroll, IL 61053
The cabin is located about 5 1/2 miles northeast of Mt. Carroll. 25 total is the maximum capacity inside. Outside, pitching tents is permitted. Water is available from a well on the site. The cabin is equipped with propane lights. You will need a small propane cylinder to use the lights, such as one you would use for a gas grill. There is a port-a-john. Yes, a fireplace – bring your own firewood. Take all trash back home with you. Do not leave it lying around for the next group to enjoy. Be courteous Scouts and leave enough firewood for the next group. Please remember the outdoor code and follow it.

Firewood

DO NOT bring firewood from home. Both camps provide a box of split wood as part of the cabin fee.

For outside fires, use wood found on the ground and not from the wood boxes.








** Illinois State law mandates that a certified food handler be present any time the kitchen is in operation. Only the Illinois certificate is accepted. Proof of certification will be required prior to any group being approved to use the kitchen.
