The importance of English in business-communication
As we live in a technology-centered century, the internet is one of the easiest ways to inform 
people about business. As English is the high-status language of the internet and media it will be 
much more effective to use this language than others to support the widespread of information. If 
entrepreneurs’ English is of a high standard, it is positive for them to negotiate the deals of business. 
Sometimes general knowledge of the language is ineffective as some cases need a special approach to 
deal with. For instance, if it is a kind of international business, the owners have to interact with people 
from nearly all over the world which means diverse cultural norms and the language pragmatics will 
help in this case to get the point appropriately by choosing the right speech act and speech act sets.
Moreover, communication is significant in business, since, if someone wants to enlarge his/her 
business, it is beneficial for them to learn the English language to communicate with people from all 
over the world. This type of communication is called “business communication” which consists of 
four types of communication that are verbal, non-verbal, written, and electronic communications. 
The following diagram illustrates how some of the dominant companies use these types of commu-
nications.
It shows that language is the prime tool of communication as the object of all three types of 
communications (verbal, written, and electronic) based on the language, namely English except the 
non-verbal type. It is stated in several scientific pieces of research that English has become a language 
of cross-border business communication and currently, employers are paying more attention to hire 
an employee with perfect knowledge of English, who uses this language fluently and accurately as 
both of them crucial aspects of language than they did before. 
Owning a business means collaborating and working as a team member even you are a boss. For 
this reason, having networking skills is required in the abovementioned cases, especially, in terms of 
the partnership, and the English language, which is a 
lingua franca
, is a crucial aspect of networking 
skills as it is impossible to learn each partners’ language and culture. It can be seen that an entity is 
constantly being progressed by the domain of business and it is crucial for being a virtuous business-
man to be aware of how to properly interact with people to make them rely on and support him/her.

In these circumstances, they need Business English which is a moderately novel field of the English 
language that is essential for an entrepreneur to improve himself/herself while doing business that 
circles insistence and inducement simultaneously.
As it is known that several business meetings are annually organized many times in different 
parts of the world for various reasons. Most of the organized meetings of corporations are carried 
out in this language to make the context understandable for everyone who is the representative of 
different cultures and countries. Being competent and confident in both written and spoken English 
provides an opportunity to have a perfect impression. Even, when it comes to getting a promotion in 
the business world, knowing high standards of English helps candidates to reach their aims. There 
is a common saying among representatives of the business world that “If you want to conquer the 
whole world, then improve your English”. It is believed that the more you learn English, the closer 
the world will be. 
According to the many surveys, it is crystal clear that most of the big companies are implement-
ing English as an official language for their company to enlarge and introduce their businesses in 
the extremely competitive commercial world. Nishanthi (2018) points out the names of some global 
companies where English has the status of official corporate language and they are the followings
“… Airbus, Daimler Fast Retailing, Nokia, Renault, Samsung, SAP, Technicolor, and Microsoft 
in Beijing. Besides, in 2010 the company Rakuten, a Japanese cross between Amazon and Ebay, 
made it mandatory for their 7,100 Japanese employees to be able to speak English.” (p.873)
