4. Should extinction be dealt with nationally or globally?
There should be some international laws to protect wild animals. I think that the situation is
better now than it was 30 or 40 years ago, but last week I still saw some terrible images of
Japanese fishermen hunting for whales. It seems highly immoral, and so brutal (= cruel).
Countries should share the responsibility of safeguarding animals that represent our world's
natural heritage.
5. Do any animals have a special significance in your culture?
Yes, definitely. Many animals have a special significance in Chinese culture. For example,
the dragon is a symbol of kingship, and our emperors always had a dragon on their walls, or
embroidered on their clothes. In addition, dogs are supposed to be loyal; cows are hard-working
(horses are hard-working in english-speaking countries); monkeys are smart. But my foreign
teacher told me that in English, monkeys were stupid. It's confusing! In China, tigers symbolize
power and courage; the phoenix is synonymous with (=is the same as) good fortune; butterflies
represent love. We have a legend where 2 young people could not get married because their
families disapproved of their wedding. They both died, and became happy butterflies and flew
away together. It is the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet!
