The abstract of the course: the course gives an insight into the most important researches and conceptions of the civilization historians. It introduces students to the essence of the notion civilization, as well as to the principles of civilization’s division into periods and its typology. Special attention is paid to the problems of civilization and culture development and interaction.
The aims of the course:

To give the students the basic knowledge and overall impression of civilization basic problems, which are necessary in their further cultural studies.

To develop students’ practical skills when working with academic professional literature.

To help students find differences between cultural and civilization processes in the history of humankind.
Course credit value: 3 CP, 1/3 of the studies are seminars and practice team work.

Every student should write a report on the given text.

Task of the report: to give one’s own interpretation after the analysis of the given text and prove its urgency.

The notion of civilization, division and criteria. Civilization as a social and cultural unity. Historic perspective of civilization, its progress or regress.

Ancient civilizations (4-6 BC). The beginning of human society, its development and influencing factors- climate, geography, social acknowledgement, religion. The civilization structure of the Country between two rivers and Egypt, similarities and differences. State and law. Science and education. Cultural environment.

Ancient civilizations (9 BC – 5 AD) Local civilizations – Greek and Roman. The formation of a state, its consolidation, political structure of city states. Colonization, wars and conquests. The role of a personality in the society. The area of the influence of ancient culture and its influence on further civilizations.

European Christian civilization (since 1 AD). The structure of Christian civilization and local civilizations. Christianity beginnings, reasons and ways of spreading. The role of church in the formation of states in Europe. Heretic movements, inquisition. Byzantine civilization, its connection to other Christian civilizations. Influence of Byzantine and Russia on the European history.

Islam civilization (since 7 AD). The formation of Islam and its prevalence. States, their peculiarities compared with Christian civilization. Society and family. Culture of cities, development of science and technology, their spreading and influence in Europe. Military conflicts between Christian and Islam civilizations.

Civilization of South-Eastern Asia. Its structure and local civilizations – Indian, Chinese, Japanese. Religion and its influence on local civilizations’ interaction and conflicts- Buddhism, Sinto, Hinduism. State. Society. Philosophic theories. The peculiarities of South-Eastern Asian civilizations.

Course abstract: description of the history of Baltic culture taking intoaccount the historical context of Europe and Eastern Europe and modern situation of Cultrology, as well as the specific character of the administration of culture in the new-time socially cultural and polyethnic environment in Latvia and other countries. In the factological materials there is a dominance of information about cultural monuments, most noticeable works of literature and art, specific features of the development of culture in particular place.
Aims of the course: 1. To characterize the main periods of the history of culture in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in the historic context of Europe and Eastern Europe;
2. To characterize the common phenomenons and tendencies for the Baltic states and also those peculiar in every state.
3. To characterize the topicalities of the development of culture in the modern Baltics.
Course tasks: 1. To give the general knowledge of the history of culture in the Baltic states;
2. to introduce to the students the main periods of the history of culture in the Baltics and values of particular periods.
3. to characterize the cultural topicalities in the modern cultural process.
Credit value of the course: 2 CP, 32 contact hours (20 hours of lectures, 12 hours of seminars).
Assessment: exam.
Requirements:
-
active participation in the seminars: each student has to participate in 2 seminars (8 hours) and read approximately 400 pages of text during the course;
-
to prepare a writing task (8-10 pages) on one of the course themes included into the course plan;
-
the exam assessment and acquisition of the credit points is determined by: 1) lectures attendance 30%, 2) seminar work 20%, 3) writing task 10%, 4) answers at the exam 40%.
