Design of Solution

After the requirements phase was complete the project moved into the design phase. During this phase of the project, I again worked in the avionics team and produced the design of the communications sub-system. At the time the business did not have a dedicated design tool so all designs were simply recorded in Microsoft Word documents. I designed the sub-system to be written in C++ and went to the level of detailing each C++ class within the code, the main functionality to be contained in each class (some of it written in pseudo code), the interaction between each class and how each part of the design was traceable back to the requirement set. I also produced an Interface Control Document (ICD) detailing the interactions between the communications sub-system and other sub-systems being produced for the simulator. During the development of this document I had to work very closely with the other software designers to ensure that all interfaces matched what was expected for their sub-systems. At the end of the design phase the team had to go through a Critical Design Review (CDR) where the design of the overall system along with all sub-systems of the simulator were reviewed and approved by an independent design reviewer and the reviewer issues either a Pass or Fail for the project. In the lead up to this review, the Synthetic Environment and Aircraft Systems (SEAS) work package required technical support. At this point I joined the SEAS team to help get the designs ready for the review. I took a partially completed design of one of the weapons sub-systems and finished it ensuring that the ICD was up to date, that the software design included configuration Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) and conformed to the coding standard defined by the technical lead. Both of the designs I worked on were successful during the CDR with no actions on either of them coming out of the review. The overall project also received a pass and thus we were able to move into the implementation phase of the project.
