Task. Give word examples and classify them according to the 3 approaches of meaning.

Referential approach:

When we pronounce the word “apple”, the listeners understand the concept of that word which is a type of fruit and can be eaten. That word itself ,as a result, refers to actual apple that we imagine and shape in our brain as soon as we hear this word.

Functional approach:

In this approach of meaning, we can know the meaning by its function within the sentences. Fot example, we know the meanings of these two words – “differentiate” and “different”, but their usage in sentencces is slightly different to each other. Noun is followed by the word “differentiate” like “children can differentiate the past from the present”, and prounoun is preceeded “we differentiate”. However, the position occupied by the word “different” is different: it may be followed by a noun e.g. different students.
