What are advantages and disadvantages of using mother tongue in teaching
English? There are advantages and disadvantages of using mother tongue in classroom. Advantages of using mother tongue is that mother tongue makes it easier for
children to pick up and learn other languages. Using mother tongue helps a child develop their critical thinking and literacy skills. Research shows that children learning in mother tongue adopt a better understanding of the curriculum.
In addition to, it reduces learner anxiety and creates a more relaxing learning
environment. And it is a means of bringing the learner's cultural background
knowledge into the class. Next, it facilities checking understanding and giving
instructions. Again, it facilities the task of explaining the meaning of abstract words and of introducing the main difference in grammar and pronounciation between L1 and L2 .
However , it is just this kind of tendency that could lead to the development of an excessive dependency on the student's mother tongue by both teachers and students .Consequently, students lose confidence in their ability to communication in English They may feel that the only way they would understand anything the teacher says is when it has been translated , or they use their mother tongue even when they are perfectly capable of expressing the same idea in English .This can significantly reduce student's opportunities to practice English , and students fail to realise that using English in classroom activities is essential to improve their language skills. Translation also regularly creates the problem of oversimplification because many cultural and linguistic nuances cannot be directly translated .For example, the sentences " That's so cool !" in English means that something is amazing and incredible. This phrase is the product of the continual evolution of the English language that was affected by the specific culture at a certain time. A direct translation of this sentence into Chinese , for example would not have the same meaning ; in fact it would not make sense at all.
