The City of Perth Amboy in Middlesex County has a long, rich history dating back to December 8, 1651. The city is home to the only official Royal Governor’s Mansion still intact since Colonial days, commonly known as the Proprietary House, and the oldest City Hall in continuous use in the country. It was in Perth Amboy City Hall that the State of New Jersey became the first state in the country to ratify the Bill of Rights in 1789. Market Square Park, commonly referred to as City Hall Park or City Hall Circle, celebrates and stands as a monument to the City’s historical significance, and contains the Bill of Rights Arch and an exact replica of the Liberty Bell. This resolution urges that the historical significance of Market Square Park in the City of Perth Amboy be recognized for listing on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places.
