Activity 12: Include a variety of cultural 
backgrounds 
Pragmatics and culture are diverse and can 
vary from region to region and even from 
person to person. Pragmatic competence 
necessitates the ability to communicate 
appropriately with speakers from different 
backgrounds in a variety of situations; thus,
it is important to include a range of variability 
within pragmatic lessons. As Limberg (2015) 
notes, students need flexibility in their 
language choices so they can adapt to a wide 
range of communicative situations. Students 
who are likely to interact with other non-
native speakers in the region should be given
role-play situations and contexts that require 
them to complain to other non-native 
speakers in the activities. Students may need 
to adapt their language choices, depending 
on the power relationship between speakers. 
Discussion activities should treat culture as a 
multifaceted concept rather than reducing the 
target language or other culture to simplified
