1. Listen to the text (a report, lecture, essay etc) and do the task 
given to you.
2. Read a newspaper or magazine article. Be ready to discuss its 
peculiarities.
3. Discuss one of the topics studied during the year with the ex-
aminer. While talking, try to use new words and expressions which 
you’ve learnt.
Newspaper or Magazine Article Analysis
An Outline
1. An article is an example of a publicistic style, media discourse.
2. Type of an article: a) educational; b) ideological; c) sociological; 
d) entertaining; e) advertising, etc.
3. The summary of the article.
4. The headline of the article, structural and semantic peculiarities. 
How is the headline connected with the text of the article?
5. The text of the article has two functions: informative (to give 
facts) and pragmatic (to show the attitude, to make a certain impact 
on the reader).
6. The theme of the article. For example: fashion, scandals, prom-
inent people, global warming, marriage and divorce, etc. Prove your 
observation by the words and word-combinations taken from the 
text.

7. The language of the article. Prove that though it is an example 
of a written text, the norms are not rigid. Find examples which are 
characteristic of oral speech. Pay attention to the usage of quotations. 
The main goals of quotations: to make the article sound more objec-
tive; to give different opinions.
8. Peculiarities of the syntactical level. Analyze the general char-
acter of the sentences. Find the examples of repetition, parallel struc-
tures, contrast, etc. How is the principle of economy realized? For 
example, pay attention to ‘double compounds’, such as: a 34-year-old 
IT technician, a poppy-wearing pensioner.
9. Lexical level of analysis: abbreviations and shortenings, neolo-
gisms, synonyms (the opposition of formal: informal words), for ex-
ample: to flee — to escape; to intervene — to get involved; phrasal 
verbs ( to put up with something), idioms ( to have the guts to do 
something). Find the examples of metaphors, metonymies, similes. 
Are the stylistic devices original or trite?
10. The pragmatic function of the text: to show the attitude to-
wards the event, to evaluate the facts given in the article. What is the 
general tone of the article: positive, negative, neutral? Prove the idea 
by the examples from the text. Pay attention to different epithets 
which are used in the article. Are there any cases of irony or satire?
11. Can you find any information connected with the cultural 
peculiarities of the country in the article?
