Handout 1. Working with vocabulary

Vocabulary is crucial for getting meaning from a written or oral text. Without knowledge of key vocabulary in a text, a learner may have serious trouble understanding the message. Vocabulary (the knowledge of words and word meanings) is one of the key building blocks in learning a new language. The more words a learner knows the more they will be able to understand what they hear and read and the better they will become at expressing what they want to when speaking or writing. The larger a student’s vocabulary becomes, the easier it will be to connect a new word with words they already know. A large vocabulary raises achievement and confidence and aids the student in becoming an independent learner.

However, it is important to think about the most appropriate ways to build a learner’s vocabulary. Learning lists of words out of context is of limited use. It is better to learn words in context, and important to provide students with opportunities for purposeful communication. Key phrases and structures are generally more useful than key words, and easier for a learner to internalise and be able to reproduce.
