Handout 2. Idiomatic expressions

In English, we can compare a person to an animal's characteristic by using "as + adjective (characteristic) + as a(n) animal." So, if Sue is very stubborn, we could say: "Sue is as stubborn as a mule."

Look at the names of animals below. What do you know about them? Is a bee clever? No, but it is busy. It's always working hard. How about a horse? Now use the names of the animals to guess the idiom.

as clever as a fox

as busy as a bee

as stubborn as a mule

as strong as a horse

as quiet as a mouse

as free as a bird

as hungry as a bear

as devoted as a dog

as quick as a rabbit

as fat as a pig
Handout 3. Idioms with colours

A lot of English idioms use colors to describe feelings. Below are just a few examples.

Jessica was seeing red when her computer suddenly crashed.

When George brought home his expensive car, his neighbor Bill was green with envy.

After Susan’s boyfriend left her, she felt blue and cried all the time.

He was a yellow-bellied cowboy. He always ran away from a fight.

John asked Nancy to marry him. He was tickled pink when she said yes.

To see red- We probably use red to describe anger because people’s faces turn red when they are angry. Imagine you became so angry your eyes became red, too. Then you might begin to “see red.”

Green with envy - I’m not sure why people are green when they are envious, but this is a very common saying.

To feel blue – sad. You can also “be blue.”

Yellow bellied - Belly means stomach. If your belly is yellow, you are not brave. This idiom isn’t used as much nowadays as it was in the past.

Tickled pink- When someone is tickled, he feels very excited and happy. Perhaps your skin becomes pink when you feel happy.
