Nickelodeon’s Kid’s Choice Awards a Slimy Success
Hosted by Josh Duhamel, the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards was an unforgettable night of stars and slime! With over 325 million votes cast, the competition was fierce (and fun). There were over 20 award categories spanning from film and television to books, music and sport.
Hosting the Kids’ Choice Awards is no easy task. You’ve got to worry about hoards of screaming kids, random mustache alarms and those darn surprise slime attacks! To top it all off, you have to squeeze all the insanity into 90 minutes. Josh Duhamel may not have been an obvious choice to host this year’s ceremony, but one would have to say, he was one of the best hosts the show has had in years. The KCAs are notorious for picking high-energy hosts — Will Smith, Jack Black and Kevin James were all legendary — but Josh brought a totally different dynamic to the show.
Twilight‘s Kristen Stewart, One Direction, The Hunger Games, Victorious, and Adam Sandler were all winners of Saturday night’s Kids’ Choice Awards on Nickelodeon. But that’s not what makes it worth were watching, is it? When it comes to the KCA, it’s all about the slime. We were promised a Slime Dunk, a Mega-Slime, and more — and Nickelodeon, along with Duhamel, in an array of silly costumes, delivered.
After Pitbull was the night’s first to get the green goop, LA Lakers’ center Dwight Howard found himself in Nick’s slime sights. No surprise, ever-game Sandra Bullock and Neil Patrick Harris took the third hit of the night as they presented Favorite Movie Actress to Kristen Stewart, who told the fans, “I finally realized my kindergartner self.” Nick Cannon and Josh Duhamel, in sumo wrestler outfits no less, got the biggest — and final — slime of the night courtesy of The Rock, a.k.a. Favorite Male Buttkicker.
Amongst all the slime there were actually awards given out at the event. Johnny Depp and Katy Perry accepted orange blimp-shaped trophies for favorite movie actor and female singer respectively and both stars had words of wisdom for the audience of kids and young teens. "This is such a cool award ... stay safe, stay in school, don't do drugs," Perry told them. Depp said he was "truly honored and humbled. Thank you for what you are, which is the future." Selena Gomez took the female TV actress award for her Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place," even though the show came to an end more than a year ago.
There were several no-shows who did not make it to accept their award in person including One Direction, who were on tour and won for favorite music group and song for "What Makes You Beautiful," "X Factor" judge Simon Cowell (favorite villain), and Ross Lynch, who was named favorite TV actor for Disney Channel's pop star series "Austin & Ally." Justin Bieber, who was also on tour, was voted favorite male singer.
Other awards went to Nickelodeon's "Victorious" for top TV show, "The Hunger Games" for favorite movie, "Wreck-It Ralph" for top animated movie, and race car driver Danica Patrick and basketball player LeBron James for top athletes.
At the end of the night Josh Duhamel was able to pull off a successful performance as host, many stars were slimed and all the blimps were handed out to the year’s most memorable celebrities. Here is to hoping next year’s host can live up to the insanity that was this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards.
