St. Petersburg
In June 1828, Gogol graduated from the gymnasium, and in December of the same year he arrived in Moscow.
St. Petersburg, so that here, in the capital of the state, you can fulfill your desire to serve
to the people. However, in St. Petersburg Gogol had to endure a number of disappointments. The capital appeared to him as a city of officials, indifferent to everything that goes beyond their official duties.
Despite the letters of recommendation,Gogol could not find a suitable place of service. Then he decided to embark on the path of a writer. In July 1829, he published the poem "Hans Kuchelgarten", but two reviews that appeared in magazines were scathing.Shocked by this, he took the non-distributed copies of his book from the bookseller and burned them.
D epressed by his failures, Gogol went abroad, but soon realized that he could not live in a foreign land. Two months later, he was back in St. Petersburg.
Upon his arrival, Gogol made an attempt to get a job as an actor at the Alexandrinsky Theater, but even here he failed:his manner of reading-simple, manly, and easy-did not please the examiner.
At the end of 1929, Gogol managed to enter the service of a clerical official in one of the departments. The official service did not last long, but the impressions received here did not pass for him without a trace:they provided material for "Notes of a Madman" and "Overcoat", in which he depicted the bureaucratic world of St. Petersburg.
Official service did not satisfy Gogol. He startsт writing again. The very life of the late 20s tells him what and how to write.Gogol was particularly attracted to Ukrainian folk poetry.Back in April and May 1829, Gogol wrote letters to his mother asking her to send him aboutthe scriptures of the customs, traditions, beliefs of Ukrainians, their ancient outfits.Gogol begins to work on stories from Ukrainian life, using folk legends and fairy tales.
In 1831-1832, these stories were published in two collections under the general title "Evenings on a farm near Dikanka". "Evenings..." was an important stage in Gogol's creative career. They became the grain on which the subsequent works of the great writer grew. Here the main idea of his entire work was determined:love for the people, the source of beauty and fullness of life, and hatred for the "vulgarity of a vulgar person", "non-copter","exister". "Evenings..." was a great success, but this success has not yet convinced Gogol that he should become a professional writer.
Gogol turns to history, plans to write a number of scientific works. He got a position as a history teacher at first in a secondary school, and in 1834-35 he began lecturing at St. Petersburg University.
However, teaching in the conditions in which it was placed by the government of Nicholas I could not satisfy Gogol. It starts
At the end of 1835, he left the university and devoted himself entirely to writing.
