Introduction 
The  study  of  literature  has  always  two  aspects,  one  of  simple  enjoyment  and  appreciation,  the  other  of 
analysis  and  exact  description.  Let  a  little  song  appeal  to  the  ear,  or  a  noble  book  to  the  heart,  and  for  the 
moment, at least, we discover a new world, a world so different from our own that it seems a place of dreams 
and  magic.  To  enter  and enjoy  this  new  world, to  love  good  books  is  the  chief  thing; to  analyze  and  explain 
them  is  a  less  joyous  but  still  an  important  matter.  We  wish  to  understand  as  well  as  to  enjoy  literature. 
So, 
what  is  Literature?  It  is  the  expression  of  life  in words  of  truth  and  beauty;  it  is  the written  record  of 
man's spirit, of his thoughts, emotions, aspirations; it is the history, and the only history, of the human 
soul
.  
English Literature is a component part of the world literature. It played an important role in enriching and 
development of the world literature. It consists of the poetry,  prose and drama, written by authors in England, 
Scotland and Wales.  
Such names as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Daniel Defoe, Charles 
Dickens, Jonathan Swift, George Gordon Byron, Bernard Shaw and others are famous all over the world. Their 
way of writing has influenced a great number of writers, poets and playwrights from other countries. One of the 
characteristic features of the English authors is that they have always been deeply interested in political and 
social environment of their time.
