Adapted For The UPG Sustainability Institute from the Community EE Fellows Leadership Institute

  1. Vision: What is your big vision for why this will work in your community to address the identified need?

  1. Values: What is important to you?

  1. Problem or Issue: What are you trying to address? This should be a concise statement of the specific situation you will address within this goal area.

  1. Stakeholders and Community Needs or Assets: This is documentation of need and/or community/organizational assets that led you to address this problem or issue. This helps to make the case stronger and more specific by identifying and targeting the participants and activities. This documentation can also be used for evaluation of activities in the future.

  1. Desired Results (Outcomes, Outputs, and Impacts): This explains what you expect to achieve, and most closely resembles what may be referred to as “goals” in the short term, mid term, and long term. This should include a short-term measurable output to target as well as longer-term outcomes and impacts that may be evaluated over time. (For example, if your goal is financial resiliency, an output might be implementing opportunities for donors to give “legacy” gifts to your organization, an outcome might be increased financial support for your organization from private donors, and an impact might be increased financial stability for your organization).

  1. Strategies: This section identifies potential strategies that could help to achieve your desired results. The strategies should be based in “best practice” research that connects what you plan to do with why you think it will work for your organization. Strategies should be descriptive of the WHAT and not the HOW (use the action planning worksheets for the HOW). Using the financial resiliency example above, potential strategies might include (a) creating a planned giving program that allows donors to make end of life gifts, (b) establishing relationships with financial planners, or (c) partnering with community foundations. These strategies should be based in research that demonstrates or makes the case for why your organization might want to undertake this activity and provides evidence that this strategy has been effective in other settings.
