3. What does this action mean to me? It’s as if … The third step
in  the  process  of  scene  analysis  involves  the  use  of  the  actor’s
imagination.  As  you  will  see,  the  “as-if”  serves  several  crucial
purposes  and  is  the  logical  completion  of  the  analysis  process.  It
helps  the  actor  gain  a  fuller  understanding  of  the  action  he  has
chosen for a given scene. It also gives the actor a clear sense of the
consequences  of  not  completing  his  action—that  is  to  say,  it  sets

the stakes in the playing of the scene. This is especially important
in terms of staying true to the playwright’s intentions. Finally, the
as-if reinforces the actor’s sense of play, which is vital to his work.
The  way  to  achieve  the  above-mentioned  bene ts  is  not  by
investing  in  an  emotional  state,  but  by  creating  for  yourself  a
tangible, personal stake in the action you have chosen. The means
of  bringing  the  action  home  to  you  is  the  as-if.  It  is  a  simple
mnemonic  device,  a  suggestion  by  means  of  which  you  remind
yourself  of  what  the  action  means  to  you  in  personal  terms.  It
should  be  a  simple,  fun  (and  again,  we  do  mean  compelling)
fantasy  in  which  you  use  your  imagination  in  a  way  you  can
readily  accept.  For  example,  creating  an  as-if  in  which  you  are
in ltrating the Nazi forces that have abducted your family may be
an  interesting  fantasy,  but  unless  you  have  experience  as  an
international spy, the as-if will not work because you have no idea
what to actually physically do in that situation. In other words, it’s
not something you can act on. Using again the example of Stanley
Kowalski, here are a few examples of good as-ifs:
1.  What  is  the  character  literally  doing?  Screaming  for  Stella  to
come  home  to  him.  (This  step  will  remain  the  same  for  the
following actions and as-ifs.)
2. What is the essential action of what the character is doing in this
scene? To beg a loved one’s forgiveness.
3.  What  is  that  action  like  to  me?  It’s  as  if  I  broke  my  mother’s
prized family heirloom and she threw me out of the house. To
be allowed back into my house I must beg her forgiveness.
This is a good as-if for several reasons. First, it is something that
could happen. Thus I can accept it unquestioningly and act upon it
immediately.  Second,  it  is  simple  and  direct,  and  does  not
complicate the action. Third, it is in line with the intentions of the
playwright because the stakes are high: if I don’t get my mother’s
forgiveness something terrible will happen—I will be banned from

my home. In the scene, if Stanley doesn’t convince Stella to come
home to him, he too will incur a terrible loss.
An as-if should be no more than two or three simple sentences in
order  to  keep  it  readily  accessible  to  you.  It  should  have  enough
details to spark your imagination, but not so many as to form in
e ect a substitute for the scene. If the above as-if had been phrased
simply “It’s as if I had  ght with my mother,” it would have been
ine ective. Two details—breaking the heirloom and being thrown
out of the house—make it personal and place it in adjustment with
the stakes of the scene.
