CASE STUDY
on Being introvert in language learning




Prepared about integrated course of foreign language teaching

SHAHRISABZ 2022

INTRODUCTION


Although introverted and extroverted personality types have
been identified as significant factors in studies of other areas of
educational and psychological research , they have received only
sporadic attention in studies of language – learning strategies , which
are frequently associated with language learning success . It has long
been a point of contention whether introverts are better language
learners . There are so many introvert people of this type today .
They cannot articulate their views in public . They have a stronger
sense of a shame . So they can’t tell it even if they have a complete
idea . Working with introvert students is a little harder . But they
can show good results in written exercises and tests even if they
do not show good results orally. Numberous psychological test
have been developed for introvert students .
The majority of collage majors contain equal numbers of
extroverted and introverted students according to a study by
Schaubhut and Thompson that included over 100 , 000
students enrolled in 75 different majors at institutions of higher
learning .
This finding is consistent with a survey done by researches
at the Center Aplications of Psychological Type between 2007
and 2010 which endicated that 40.6 percent of college students ,
polled were introverts .
Introvertion and shyness can have a significant impact
on campus as well as how they to acquire and process information
in the classroom. Introvertion has undeniable adventages :
introverts are better than extroverts in thinking before acting
absorbing and working more accurately . To identify introvert
students , scientists have also conducted numerous expriments ,
tests , pyschological processes . These tpyes of students are hard
to understand because they hardly . It is a pleasure to work
with them through written exercises.
There is someone around who leaves a noisy party before
everyone else , talks about the need to relax , or doesn’t
want to look at the bar after work , justilfying the decision
for some reason . Do not look for the handle or try to hold
it . Maybe he’s telling the truth and wanting to relax . Such is the
greatness of the introvert in life .

LEARNER PROFILE

I studied Khudoyora Sabogul , a first – year student at QarDuPI .
She was born on December 31 , 2000 in Nishan district of
Kashkadarya region . She lives in Navruz village of Nishan district of
Kashkadarya region . but now she lives in Shakhrisabz province
because she studied . Her family have 8 member. They are her
grandparents , her mother , her father , her brother , her two little
brother and she . Her family member’s characters are different. Her
character is less talking. She is currently studying in the first year
of 105 groups in the field of foriegn languages at QarDUPI in
Shakhrisabz district . She is almost finishing her first -year.
She can’t express her opinion openly in class . She didn ‘t
want to take part in the events because of her shyness but
after entering the institute we performed in the classes of
Amirkhon teacher and she almost lost her shyness .
She have been preparing for admission for 7 months and in
2001 . She entered the Karshi Pedagogical Institute in Shakhrisabz .
When she come to study , it was difficult for she communicate
with her classmates . She live in Shakhrisabz now. She live an
apartment . But her commonly live house is Fayzobod neighborhood.

Sabogul is very interesting to learn language but little to learn


Because of her shyness . Will have conversation with people .
She wants to learn by herself . She still likes to work as a group
but can’t be an active participant in the group. She reads many
books in English but finds it difficult to understand . She doesn’t
like have many people places. For example , parties and
celebrations .
Sabogul has been learning English since she was fifteen years
old . Firstly , she learned English at school . After she went
additional courses . She has many dreams for the future . It plans
to open its own training centers in the future . She is currently
trying to get IELTS . She is working tirelessly to become a master
become a master of her craft in the future . She works a lot of
on her own despite being an introvert . She is not among the
backgward students in the classes either .
When she comes at home from Institute , she likes to help
her mother with housework , read books in her free time , go
shopping , and go to places of interested .
Data collection and finding
I am interested in studying introvert people and doing research
on them . That ‘s why I chose Sabogul . I worked with her for a
week . I watched her behave in class . I checked it out by giving
her psychological tets , simple tests . The test results she worked
on gave the character to introvert people . And I found her to
be introvert . Through the test I got a lot of information about
her .
She prefers one – on – one conversations to group activities .
She often to express herself in writing . She enjoys solitude .
She seems to care about wealth , fame and status less than her
peers . People tell me that she is good lestener . She likes
to celebrate birthday on a small scale , with only one
or two close friends or family members. She tends to think
before she speak . She prefers not to show or discuss her
work with others until it’s finished. She enjoys work that
allows hers to “ dive in “ with few interruptions. She enjoys
talking about her accomplishments. She likes to recharge hers
batteries by taking off time to do something on hers own .
She is good listener , but sometimes she feels that they
take adventage of this . She gets her best ideas when she is
with other people . When she goes to party , She often likes
to leave early.
They like to spend their time alone and get tired of
external factors faster than extroverts . But that doesn’t mean
they don’t like events at all. It just means that the introvert goes
home erlier . According to the Relationship between Extraversion
and Happiness , both categories of people enjoy communication
equally .
Even the idea that introverts feel empty after an event is not
entirely true . They both feel happy during communication
and then tired . It’s natural to feel tired because you have to
work for a conversation . It is not a matter of introvertedness
or extrovertedness , but of human nature .

Discussion part


Introvert and extrovert have been linked to greater language
learning performance by several researches ( Dewaell and Furnham,
2000 , Sidek , 2000 ) . Whereas some argue that introverted learnes
are more likely to succeed ( Gan , 2012 )
According to the Ellis ( 1994 ) , there are two main hypotheses
about the likely relationship between the introvertion / extrovertion
dichotomy and language development . Extroverts are more
successful language learning , according to the first premise
because they are better at basic interpersonal communication
methods . In contrast , the second theory claims that introverts
are better language leaners because they have developed cognitive
academic ability Ehrman and Oxford ( 1989 ) discovered that
extroverts used more emotive language learning prodcedures in a
rare investigation on personality types and language learning
strategies .
Introverts preferred to transmit meaning , whilst extroverts
prefered to use visualization tactics . Because they were worried
about meaning and context introverts were slow to initiate or reply
to a discussion .
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator ( MBTI ) is one of the most
Extensively used psychological assessment inventories for
determining personality traits ( Dornyu 2005 , Ehrman and Oxford ,
1989 ) . In addintion , in various studies ( Chamorrow Premusic
and Furnham , 2003 , Dewaele and Furnham , 2000 , Gan , 2011,
Sidek 2012 ) , the MBTI has proven to be an effective psychometric
tool , for determining personality traits of language learners
( Chamorro Premusic and Furnham , 2003 , Dewaele and Furnham
2000 , Gan 2011 , Sidek 2012 ) .
Learning Strategies for Language and Personality Types .
To make the process of acquiring storing retrieving and using
information easier for learners , learning strategies are typically
delibrate , planned , and actively engaged behaviors , procedurs
appropraches , or activities ( Chamot 1887 ; Oxford 1990 ) .
Despite the fact that different researchers define learning
strategies differently there does seem to be some consensus
that strategies are ( a ) learner based process ,( b ) approaches ,
actions , and techniques , ( c) problem and goal - creinted , ( d )
intentational behavior , ( e ) conscious and unconscious activities
and I specific tactics ( Kayaolu , 2011 ) .
Various learning strategies inventories have been created
( Bialystok 1985 , Chamot 1987 ; Cohen and Mocaro 2007 ) .
The most through and in depth classification of learning strategies
has been provided by Oxford ( 1990 ) which built on earlier
classification schemes . I used it in this study .
According to Oxford there are two main groups for
language acquisition strategies ; direct and indirect .
Memory connitive and compensatory methods make
up the three subcategories of direct strategies , while
metacognitive , affective and social strategies make up indirect
strategies cognitive strategies refer to the procedures or processes
employed in learning .

Conclusion


The results of this study strongly suggest that introverted
learners use all the strategies more frequently than extroverted
and both extroverted and introverted learners reported a smilar
level of use of several specific language – learning strategies .
This is in constract to the findings of several studies that support
the correlation between introverted and extroverted personality
types and success mediated by language - learning strategies .
The overall results show that extrovert learners used more
interpersonal communication techniques while introverted learners
actively used goal – oriented specific behavior and mental operation
to facilitate the acquisition , retrieval , storage , and use of information
for both compherension and production .
In my research , if introverts act , that is , if a person goes
to many places , they become extroverts ( only some , not all of).
I advice Sabogul to communicate more with friends , family members , relatives .
