Annotation duration, size, color, placement, number, & text

Duration
Although annotations can be closed manually by a viewer (by hovering over
them and clicking the X), remove any potential hindrance by only displaying
your annotations for as long as it takes to read them. Adjust the length of time an
annotation displays, using the slidebar in the Annotations tool. YouTube
recommends that, in most cases, 5-7 seconds is sufficient enough time for most
annotations to be read and understood or clicked.

Size
Just because your annotations can take up the whole of the video player doesn't
mean that they should! Try to make them as small as possible so that they are as
subtle as they need to be and block as little of your video content as has to be
covered. Also, as with almost every area of the Internet, WRITING YOUR
ANNOTATIONS IN CAPS may be considered shouting or rude, so it is best
avoided.

Color
If your annotation is critical to the theme or message of your video, then filling
them in bright and eye-catching colors such as yellow, blue, orange, red or pink
could be the way forward. Otherwise, however, annotations need not be the
center of attention, and more muted colors such as grey, white, black - or even
the transparent option - work best. Whichever background fill color you use,
make sure that the text color contrasts with it so that your annotation is easily
read.

Placement
Avoid placing annotations in the lower third of your videos. The advertisement
overlay can obscure annotations placed there, and an embedded YouTube video
can also obstruct annotations along the very top of the frame. Try to position
them away from the very center of the video, where they can be distracting. The
left and right sidebars are a good option.

Number
YouTube recommends using the fewest number of annotations necessary in any
given video. They also suggest that you avoid displaying two annotations at the
same time, as this can be distracting for viewers. However, in instances at the
end of a video where, for example, you are asking viewers to click an annotation
to subscribe to your channel, hit 'like' or view another video, I think this advice
can be somewhat overlooked.

Type
Choose the most appropriate type of annotation to use in your video. Title
annotations, because of their size, are useful for adding headings at the
beginning of your video. Notes and Labels are good for briefly highlighting
important points or adding a quick call to action, Then there's Speech Bubbles:
many people use these as a way to 'point' to buttons that exist around the video
on the YouTube website (Like, subscribe, comment, etc.). However, these
annotations will make no sense to anyone watching if the video is embedded on
a website or in full-screen. The best use for Speech Bubbles is as a whimsical
way to add thoughts or speech to characters in your video.
