Introduction.
Professional literature has been buzzing with innovations since mid-20th century, and although in this sense innovations are well trodden ground, the definition of innovations in language teaching is yet to be found. For some, it is novelty that distinguishes innovations from non- innovative developments. Others consider change to be the decisive factor. Yet, novelty and changes themselves are tricky to define. Is it only something totally new that can be counted as innovations?
Obviously, Innovations come in various guises and include not only totally new ways of teaching; major breakthroughs in FL methodology do not happen too frequently. Innovations today tend to focus on new modes of application of existing tools, extensions to new audiences and modification of the modern environment. Change is to be deliberate and it is to develop purposefully at least one area of FL communicative competence.
When we talk about using new technologies in language classroom, what technologies are we referring to? Within and outside education, a variety of terms are used to describe the new phenomena. Before we begin to understand how we might shape and be shaped by these new technologies, we need to deconstruct the plethora of terms, knowing as we do that the way we name a concept will influence the way we perceive it. The metaphors we choose almost always come from previous technologies, and so we find ourselves hobbled to the past while we try to imagine the future; and as we know from other settings metaphors shape our understanding and view of the world. If we use for example, the term of email, are we restricting ourselves to thinking about this type of communication as a form of letter? Of we use of the term of desktop as a metaphor, are we restricting ourselves to a two dimensional desk. Educational technology is a field of study that investigates the process of anlyzing, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the instructional environment and learning materials in order to improve teaching and learning. It is important to keep in mind that the purpose of educational technology is to improve education. The learning materials today have greatly expanded because of the various technological advances. Instructional materials include more conventional materials such as blackboard, overhead, projectors, televisions, slide projectors, opaque projectors, as well as new materials such as the computer various software applications, camcorders digital cameras, scanners, the Internet satellites, interactive TV, video and audio conferencing artificial intelligence and so on.
