12. Infrastructure EK
12.1. Water Supply
The main waterway of Khoresm province is the Amudarya river. There are such irrigation channels as: Levoberejny, Tashsakay, Shavat, Palvan, Gazavat, and drainage channels are Ozerny, Daryalyk, Chekkakul, Divankulsky. The province has such water reservoirs as: Sultansanzhar, Koshbulak and Kaparas. The reservoirs have a total storage capacity of 7.36 billion m3 and available water is 5.2 billion m3. The average volume of water resources is about 25.2 billion m3. per year. The main river is Amu Darya. In the region, there is one artificial reservoir with a total displacement of about 7800.0 million m3.¹
At present, more than 50.0% of the population of the Khorezm region is covered by centralized water supply. The water supply networks and facilities on the project territory were built and developed in the period 1970-2001. Due to the long-term operation of the networks (20-50 years), losses of drinking water due to accidents and leaks on the district's water supply networks account for about 40-50% of the total volume of water supply.
61.9 percent of Khorezm and 54.2 percent of Kashkadarya regions are provided with centralized drinking water, the rest of the residents of these regions use alternative sources of drinking water. Providing the population with drinking water is an urgent issue, because it is precisely on its solution that human health depends. In some areas of all four regions, especially in many settlements of Khorezm and Kashkadarya regions, the population consumes imported water. However, most of the vehicles for the delivery of water does not meet the requirements. Residents of these areas, contrary to sanitary standards, are forced to store water in tanks and open tanks. This seriously affects their health.

12.2. Electrical Supply
The northwest of Uzbekistan needs a reliable supply of electricity to attract large investments in the industry and meet the growing demand for energy. Karakalpakstan and Khorezm regions, inhabited by 3 million people and located in the western part of Uzbekistan, will continue to attract important investment projects. Reliable power supply is critical to support industrial development in these regions. Indeed, these regions expect power demand to grow at 3%, double the expected medium-term national average rate of 1.5%. The Takhiatash TPP is the main source of power supply in the Karakalpakstan and Khorezm regions.²
12.3. Solid Waste
Khorezm region, home to 1.7 million people, generates around 280,000 tons of solid waste a year. In rural areas, where 67 percent of the region’s population live, only 10 percent of residents benefit from waste management services. Karakalpakstan occupies more than one-third of Uzbekistan’s total territory and the almost 2 million inhabitants generate around 187,000 tons of solid waste a year. Half the region’s population lives in rural areas and only a third of local residents are covered by waste collection services.
None of the existing waste facilities in Khorezm or Karakalpakstan can qualify as sanitary landfill under international standards. They have no basic protection or specialized service equipment and therefore pose a major threat to the environment and public health.
Regional utility company will be able to construct an integrated regional solid waste management system with higher environmental and service quality standards. Once implemented it will bring sizeable environmental benefits, such as reduced pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.
