Roman Catholic

• British religion used to be closely connected with kings, queens and politics. England was a Roman Catholic country until 1534.

Anglican Church

• In 1534 Parliament named Henry head of the Church of England.
• This was the

beginning of the

Anglican Church.

Protestantism

• However the Protestant movement in Europe was growing very strong at that time. When Henry quarreled with Rome and ordered the Bible to be translated into English, the way was open for Protestantism to spread in England. Over the next years many people changed to this new religion.

ISLAM

• Until 2009, Islam was the second fastest growing religion in the UK. Islam is now the dominant religion in the UK, influenced by migrants.

THE MOSQUES

• The increase in the number of Muslims has led to the need for new mosques, and by 2007 the number of mosques had reached 1,500.

The cities with the most Muslim population

• Most populous cities are Manchester (15.8%), Birmingham (21.8%) and Bradford (24.7%). Demographic changes have affected all major UK cities, including the capital, London.
