OUTREACH NOTICE
Forestry Technician (Wilderness/Trails)

Lincoln Ranger District

Helena National Forest

Duty Station: Lincoln, Montana
Position: The Helena National Forest will be filling one permanent full time GS-0462-5/6/7 Forestry Technician (Wilderness/Trails) with a duty station of Lincoln, Montana.
Duties: The incumbent performs a variety of work in support of the unit’s trails, wilderness, and recreation programs. Duties include developing and monitoring the logistics required for completion of wilderness and non-wilderness projects associated with trail maintenance, construction and reconstruction. Implements trail and bridge construction and reconstruction projects. Performs independently or as a leader of a small project crew in trail maintenance and construction. Serves as a Forest Protection Officer. Assists with enforcement of off-road-vehicle restrictions.
Responsible for the maintenance and care of pack and saddle stock and for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used in transport of livestock. Provides education in proper livestock minimum impact use techniques, safety procedures, and packing and saddle stock use to backcountry user groups, individuals, and other agency personnel.
Conducts Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) studies, interprets findings to make recommendations to wilderness management objectives and policies, and suggests alternative methods for meeting objectives and/or policies. Defines inventory and monitoring data needed to assess wilderness conditions.
Jointly prepares outfitter/guide camp operation/administration plans with outfitters; inspects outfitter operational areas/camps for wilderness plan/policy compliance; takes necessary follow-up action for items of noncompliance; makes recommendations to immediate supervisor relating to wilderness special use permit administration.
Forest: The Helena National Forest is located in west central Montana and is approximately 980,000 acres. It straddles the Continental Divide and encompasses headwaters of both the Missouri and Columbia River systems. Elevations range from about 3,500 feet to over 9,000 feet. Precipitation varies from 10 to 60 inches across the forest. Vegetative cover varies from rolling grassland interspersed with timber patches at the lower elevations, solid timber on the steeper middle and upper slopes, to subalpine types or bare ridges in the high country. Lincoln, MT

Location: The Lincoln Ranger District is located about 60 miles northwest of Helena on US Highway 200. Lincoln is an unincorporated town located within Lewis and Clark County. The County seat is located in Helena. The population of Lincoln and the surrounding area is approximately 1800. The community lies in a forested valley at the headwaters of the Blackfoot River. The next closest community is Helmville, 21 miles to the west.
Helena (populations 28,000 and home of the Forest Supervisor’s Office) is located across the Continental Divide, 60 miles to the southeast of Lincoln. Great Falls (population 58,000) is 87 miles to the northeast and Missoula (population 66,000, location of the Regional Office) is 80 miles to the west.
Approximately 78,000 acres of the Scapegoat Wilderness area lies within the jurisdiction of the Lincoln Ranger District. The Scapegoat combined with the Great Bear and the Bob Marshall Wilderness areas form the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, an area of more than 1.5 million acres http://www.fs.usda.gov/attmain/flathead/specialplaces.
Climate: Lincoln’s elevation is 4575 feet. Summers are mild with average highs in the 70’s and average lows in the mid 30’s. Winter temperatures average highs in the mid 30’s and average lows in the teens, although more extreme temperatures dropping down to –40 degrees are not uncommon. Annual snowfall averages 99.5 inches and annual precipitation averages 19”.
Housing: The Lincoln Ranger District has three homes (for permanent employees) and four bunkhouses (for temporary employees). Three bedroom homes in the Lincoln area range from $100,000 to $220,000. Rentals are fairly scarce. Rents average $400-$550 per month.
Education: There is one K-12 school in Lincoln with approximately 200 students.
Day Care: Day care opportunities are somewhat limited with one licensed daycare facility, which offers preschool, and a few licensed childcare homes.
Medical Facilities: There is a Health Clinic in Lincoln with two doctors in attendance. A chiropractor and a dentist provide services in Lincoln one day a week. A volunteer ambulance department also services Lincoln and the surrounding area. Hospitals are located in Helena, Great Falls, and Missoula.
Churches: There are five churches in Lincoln.
Community Amenities: The town of Lincoln has a number of motels and restaurants, a grocery store, a bank, a post office, a library, gas station/handimart, hardware store, general mercantile, and a few drinking establishments. A local telephone company services the area with internet and cable television services. A town park provides opportunities for adult and youth sports and recreation (softball is a big attraction in Lincoln during the summer). Volunteer organizations and clubs such as the Lincoln Council for the Arts, Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department, Kiwanis, VFW, PTA, Upper Blackfoot Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce, Ponderosa Snow Warriors Snowmobile Club, and others provide opportunities for community involvement.
