Activate/Build Prior Knowledge:

This book is about the tundra. The tundra is the kind of land that is located around the north pole. The summers are short and just a bit warm. Life is hard in the tundra. Plants and animals have to adapt to the harsh conditions. Tundra is a treeless plain. The soil remains frozen most of the year. This presents a problem for the plants and animals.
Let’s browse the book. Look to see what kind of format the author used as you browse.

That is right. The authors used a question and answer format. Look at the table of contents page. Notice that the contents are set up as questions. If you wanted to find out where tundra is located you would turn the page 6. If you wanted to know about the people that lived in the tundra, you would turn to page 22.

The author has also set up some text boxes called “What on Earth.” Here the author is showing us some interesting facts that she has set aside to tell us more about the tundra. The author has also added other questions to each big topic question section. This helps us to see extra details about the tundra on each page.

Comprehension Strategy: Question/ Answer and summarizing information.
