Immigration Trends in Toronto East

Toronto East LIP- Fact Sheet I
Immigrants:

  • Toronto East1 is home to more than 61,000 immigrants. This represented 41% of the population in 2006.

  • From 2001 to 2006, the overall number of immigrants in Toronto East declined at a higher rate than the general population.

  • Almost half of all immigrants in Toronto East have lived in Canada for less than 15 years.

  • The immigrant population is highly concentrated in four Toronto East clusters- Broadview-East York, Central Riverdale, Crescent Town and Massey Creek/O’Connor-Parkview.

Newcomers:

  • 266,639 newcomers2 arrived in Toronto between 2001 and 2006 and 5 % or 13,311 of them settled in Toronto East.

  • The percentage of newcomers among immigrants is the same in Toronto and Toronto East: 21.6 percent.

  • In 2006, newcomers represented 8.8 % of the population in Toronto East.

  • These four clusters represent 43.5% of Toronto East’s population and 70.9% of newcomers. In other words, these are important settlement communities. Within these clusters, one in every seven individuals is a newcomer, however, in the rest of Toronto East, it is one in twenty-two.

  • The top regions of origin for newcomers settling in Toronto East are:

  • Southern Asia i.e. India, Pakistan (35%)

  • Eastern Asia i.e. China, Japan (22%)

  • Europe (19%)

  • Southeast Asia i.e. Cambodia (8%)

  • Middle East and West Asia i.e. Iraq (7%)

  • Africa (4%)
